FIFA 18 Pros and Cons – How good is it?

FIFA 18 launched just recently and as expected, there are a lot of people who’ve immediately jumped off of the hype train and into the actual game. The game has received generally good feedback but, there are still those who had to point out a couple of it’s downsides.

Given that I’ve got to play the game myself, encouraged by the amazing experience I’ve had with  FIFA 17’s “The Journey”, I believe myself to be compatible to pass on some judgment and point out the things that I did and didn’t like about the game so far.

Cons

While there are not many cons to this game, and all of this could be classified as a personal preference, I would still like to point out how I felt about specific game aspects.

The Journey

Since the journey was the main reason I’ve got this game I had to say that this year it was a bit of a letdown. Don’t get me wrong, the overall experience wasn’t all that bad. The story picks up exactly where it left off in you get to play as Alex Hunter once again. Some improvements have been made, like the balanced time off and on the pitch and even though that is a fun distraction, it often feels as a missed opportunity.

The Bioware-esque radial dialogue dial just doesn’t work as it should. It often feels like the choices and replies that you are selecting have absolutely no impact on how the story unfolds whatsoever. I never really felt like I was in control of the story. I had a feeling like I was in the audience rather than on stage and because of this, the entire experience felt shallow and much more of a diversion rather than the main event it’s supposed to be.

FUT market

If not for the FIFA 18 coins generatro over at https://gamebag.org/fifa-18-coins-generator/, the entire  experience of the FUT can be viewed as a moneygrabbing opportunity.

The players that you are given often feel underpowered to those that you can purchase. But if you want to purchase a player that’s considered to be a little bit more than average you will have to spend a significant amount of time trying to earn coins with a team of players they can barely stand up against some other players teams who had no problem investing some money into this mode to get the cards they need.

Eventually, I realized that FUT 18 simply wasn’t a mode for me due to it’s coins and points system.

Pros

Despite how I felt about “The Journey” and the FUT 18, this game still managed to keep me occupied for well over 60 hours already. Technically, it’s flawless and I can say with utmost certainty that I’ve never played a football game as smooth as this one!

  • The animations have been improved so that they’ve narrowed the gap between computer graphics and realism even further.
  • While the graphics felt extremely lifelike, the ball-play (as in dribblings) and the action sequences felt more in favor of a good, flashy show rather than realism. Luckily for me, I’m not that much of a realism fan when it comes to my video game preferences so I found this to be an exceptionally good trait rather than a con as most people have seemed to view it.
  • FIFA 18 puts an emphasis on offensive play rather than defense which is to my preference. Complemented by the fluid control system, dribblings and aggressive AI, playing the game felt much more enjoyable than it ever had.

When it comes to pretty much everything else, the game stays the same. Not many things besides the roster have changed and that’s how it should be. It’s a football game after all, you can’t really change that much.
